The National AI Research Resource (NAIRR) Summer Accelerator is an immersive, multi-week faculty development program designed to strengthen research productivity, proposal competitiveness, and instructional innovation through the strategic use of artificial intelligence, advanced computing, and NAIRR infrastructure. Hosted as a three-week summer institute in Punta Cana Dominican Republic, the program supports faculty from non-R1 institutions by providing structured access to expertise, computational resources, and guided scholarly development.
The Accelerator is organized into three thematic cohorts, each offered during a separate week and focused on a core dimension of academic success:
This cohort is designed for faculty seeking to advance or launch a research agenda using AI-enabled and computational approaches. Beginning with a research question, participants will learn how TACC and NAIRR resources can be used for refining a research question suitable for computational inquiry. Additionally, participants will use AI to complete literature reviews, develop methods, and synthesize findings, enabling structured writing sessions suitable for conference and journal research papers. There are three tracks available for this cohort:
Track I: Independent Research (bring your own topic)
Track II: Guided Research (participated in a guided topic)
Track III: Collaboration (attend with a collaborator to work on a project with AI experts).
This cohort supports faculty preparing competitive proposals for NSF and other federal or foundation funding opportunities. Participants will identify funding programs aligned with their research and learn how NAIRR resources can strengthen their proposals. Additionally, participants will develop problem statements, broader impacts, and research plans, and use AI tools to refine clarity, alignment, and structure. Experienced grant writers will provide feedback on proposal narratives and technical sections. There are four specialized tracks for this cohort:
Tracks I: Solicitation Discovery, Management, & Selection
Track II: Junior Investigator Track (for postdocs & junior faculty only)
Track III: Proposal Integration Track (integrating NAIRR in an in-progress proposal)
Track IV: Development Collaboration Track (work with a collaborator with our AI experts).
This cohort supports faculty interested in integrating AI, data, and computing into their teaching practice. Participants will design or revise a course to include AI- or data-enabled learning activities, learn how NAIRR resources can support instruction and student research, develop assignments, modules, or labs using AI tools and explore ethical and responsible AI use in education. There are three specialized tracks for this cohort:
Track I: New Course or Program Design
Track II: New or updated assignment(s) using NAIRR resources
Track III: Course or Academic Program Updates.
Across all three cohorts, participants benefit from:
Daily structured writing and development time
Hands-on exposure to TACC and NAIRR resources
AI-assisted research and writing tools
Peer and mentor feedback
Guided pathways for continued engagement with NAIRR
Emphasis on reproducibility, ethics, and responsible AI use
This retreat is open to faculty, postdoctoral researchers, and other academic professionals who seek practical application of NAIRR resources, especially members from teaching-focused and under-resourced institutions in the following roles:
Research Focused Faculty
Teaching Focused Faculty
Academic Administrators
Grant Writers
