The IAAMCS Summer Bridge Experience (SBX) is a six-week virtual program designed to prepare African American students for success in computing majors and beyond. This experience is tailored for incoming college freshmen who plan to major in computer science, software engineering, or other computing fields.
The SBX Program offers hands-on training in Python programming, access to a supportive network of Black computing professionals, and academic credit—all before students begin their first semester of college. SBX introduces participants to computing research, doctoral study pathways, and key strategies to succeed in undergraduate computing programs.
This program is for high-achieving African American students who:
Are graduating high school in Spring 2025
Will begin college in Fall 2025 at an accredited college or university
Plan to major in computer science, software engineering, or a related field
Have not taken AP Computer Science
Identify as gender-marginalized
Python programming instruction aligned with Morehouse College’s CSC 107 course
Option to earn 3 transferable college credits upon passing program exams and assignments
$2,000 stipend upon successful program completion
Engagement with Black PhDs and researchers in computing
Guest sessions covering LinkedIn, vita building, and grad school readiness
An introduction to the UR2PhD program
An invitation to the student reception at the 2025 Richard Tapia Celebration of Diversity in Computing
Applications for the IAAMCS Summer Bridge Experience (SBX) Program are open now. The deadline to apply is May 2, 2025. Students selected for the program will be notified in early May 16, 2025. Selected students must accept their offer by May 23, 2025, or the spot will be offered to another applicant.
To apply, students must complete the online application form and upload the required documents. The application should take about 20–30 minutes to complete. Only complete applications will be reviewed.
Applicants will need to upload the following:
High school transcript
College admission letter
One letter of recommendation
Short personal statement (250–400 words). In your own words, tell us why you’re interested in computer science or a related computing field. You do not need to have prior coding experience. We’re looking for your honest reflections, curiosity, and willingness to grow. Consider addressing the following in your response:
What experiences sparked your interest in computing?
Why are you considering pursuing a degree in this field?
What are your academic or career goals after college?
How would participating in the IAAMCS SBX Program help you prepare for college and your future goals?
Resume or list of extracurricular activities (Optional, but recommended)
The program is fully virtual. Students will be asked to confirm they have access to a computer and reliable internet. If not, there will be space in the application to explain their situation so support can be considered.
Applicants will be asked to enter their contact and academic information, upload required documents, and answer a few short questions. Applications are due by May 2, 2025.
If you have questions about the application or need help completing it, please contact Dr. Scruse at ashley.scruse@morehouse.edu.
